As with many adaptations, certain changes have been made to suit film-goers' tastes, but overall it can be considered fairly close to the book that started it all off in print form just over 20 years ago this month ("James Bond 007" eventually became "James Bond 007: Casino Royale" when released on DVD). The film opens with a pre-credits sequence in which a poker game is held at Montenegro's exclusive Casino Royale, where James Bond (Daniel Craig), a British MI6 agent, becomes the target of an assassin named Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen) after he wins the game. After defeated by Le Chiffre, Bond is given his bond back to return to England. However, Bond discovers that Le Chiffre had bet against him; defeated again at the Casino Royale, he has lost everything and is near-broke. To recuperate his fortune, he must win back the money he lost at Montenegro. Working closely with MI6, Bond infiltrates a criminal organisation run by Le Chiffre. His first mission is to obtain information about the money laundering operation being run by Le Chiffre for his personal gain. Shortly thereafter, Bond is sent to investigate the terrorist threat that is believed to have been planned by the criminals at the Casino Royale. His investigation, and subsequent elimination of the terrorists in Paris, results in him earning a large amount of money and thus allowing him to return to undertaking more missions for MI6. Missions that Bond undertakes for the organisation eventually lead him to a private Caribbean island. There, he must confront Le Chiffre who has been hired to assassinate Bond by his former employers, the terrorist organisation "Spectre". Le Chiffre kidnaps Vesper Lynd (Eva Green), a British Treasury employee that is in charge of checking millions of pounds of goods entering the country. After making her escape, she helps Bond obtain information about Le Chiffre's financial backers and his relationship with terrorists in Mumbai. Bond learns that he owes money to the terrorist group after losing the game at Montenegro; by killing Le Chiffre, Vesper can obtain funding from MI6 so she can help with investigations in India. At the end of the film, Bond is able to defeat Le Chiffre by winning a game of baccarat at the Casino Royale. With Le Chiffre's death, Bond is able to obtain information about the terrorist group's leader in India - Mr. White (Jesper Christensen).Much like "Die Another Day", the twenty-third "James Bond" film boasts a sumptuously-staged opening sequence that includes appearances by both Aston Martin and James Bond's signature Walther PPK pistol. This time around, however, director Sam Mendes has chosen not to include any appearances by Q branch or gadgets.
